[Saba Sports News] Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid candidly expressed his views on the NBA Slam Dunk Contest during All-Star Saturday, despite currently recovering from a significant knee injury. Embiid, known for his outspoken nature, critiqued this year’s event at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, suggesting the judging was overly generous.
He humorously claimed he could secure a win in the contest, if not for the limitations imposed by his injury-prone knees. “I’m a professional hater but I’m not hating when I say I could win the dunk contest with these scores but not sure the knees would allow it,” Embiid shared on social media.
While Embiid isn’t renowned for his dunking creativity, particularly in-game, and big men generally face a disadvantage in the contest due to less impressive hang time compared to guards and wings, the reigning MVP confidently rated himself above this year’s competitors. Although Embiid’s statement is likely more speculative than a serious intention to compete, his participation would undoubtedly add significant star appeal to the event, especially considering recent winner Mac McClung is not currently affiliated with any NBA team.
This year’s dunk contest also featured an active All-Star, Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics, marking a notable participation of a prime player in the competition. However, Brown’s initial attempt was overshadowed by a significant broadcast error by TNT, which failed to air the dunk live.
