[Saba Sports News] Boston Celtics fans have a contentious history with Kyrie Irving, which was evident Monday after the team clinched its second NBA Finals appearance in three seasons.
The Celtics eliminated the Indiana Pacers with a 105-102 Game 4 win, completing a sweep in the Eastern Conference Finals at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Several Celtics fans celebrated in the streets of Boston, where a two-word chant mocking Irving, whose Dallas Mavericks are close to making the Finals, broke out: “F–k Kyrie! F–k Kyrie!”
Irving, who spent two seasons in Boston from 2017 to 2019, left for the Brooklyn Nets in 2019 after initially telling Celtics fans he wanted to stay long-term. He has had several clashes with Celtics fans, including disrespecting the team logo during the 2021 NBA playoffs and comparing Celtics fans to a scorned ex-girlfriend.
If the Mavericks advance, Irving’s return to Boston would be a major storyline in the 2024 NBA Finals.
