James has reportedly conveyed to the Lakers that he is “mindful and respectful” of the fact that the team’s new coach may stay beyond his playing career, and the organization should make the best decision for its future.
This information seems to downplay James’ role in the team’s next hire. Additionally, there’s the consideration of James’ son Bronny and any potential interest from the Lakers. James doesn’t want to be seen as orchestrating decisions to revolve around him and his family.
Regardless of James’ stance, the Lakers appear open to unconventional and riskier head coach hires. That said, James reportedly favors their leading candidate, so he will likely be satisfied even without making his voice heard.
