[Saba Sports News] While many outsiders might see the Los Angeles Lakers head coach job as a prestigious and challenging position, those within the NBA hold a different view.
CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander reported on Monday that, within NBA circles, the Lakers job is “lowly regarded” and not seen as an ideal opportunity. The primary issue is financial, with Lakers ownership lacking the deep pockets of other NBA owners. One anonymous source told Norlander, “Anyone outside the NBA might not realize it, but the perception of the job is better than the reality. It’s a hard job, the ownership group isn’t wealthy, and the front office hasn’t proven they can build a roster. You can’t even build with three superstars under the new CBA.
Without LeBron (James) and (Anthony Davis), the team is terrible.”
Despite winning a title in 2020, the Lakers have struggled to make the playoffs since then, even with James and Davis. The new coach will be the third hire since James’ arrival in 2018, and their recent offer to Dan Hurley was seen as underwhelming despite being billed as significant.
With Hurley turning them down, the Lakers are likely to revisit candidates like James Borrego and JJ Redick. It’s understandable why a former champion coach might prefer another job over the Lakers.
