[Saba Sports] Jeff Van Gundy, currently a consultant for the Boston Celtics since his departure from ESPN last year, might take on a more prominent role with a Western Conference team.
According to NBA reporter Marc Stein, the Los Angeles Clippers are looking to hire Van Gundy as an assistant coach under Tyronn Lue. The Clippers reportedly have a “strong chance” of finalizing an agreement with Van Gundy after the NBA Finals.
Van Gundy brings extensive NBA coaching experience, with 430 career wins as head coach of the New York Knicks (1996-2001) and the Houston Rockets (2003-2007). He has a postseason record of 44-44 and led the Knicks to the 1999 NBA Finals. He also served as an assistant coach for the Knicks from 1989-1996.
Van Gundy was also considered for a head coaching position with an Eastern Conference team this season. If he aims to return as an NBA head coach after nearly two decades, an assistant coach role could be a valuable step.
The Clippers, who went 51-31 this season and lost to the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs, signed Lue to an extension last month.
