After the end of extra time, the two sides still could not draw the winner, the game went to penalty shootout.

In the penalty shoot-out, Portugal’s three players, including Ronaldo, all hit. Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa was brilliant, saving all three of Slovenia’s penalties. Portugal beat Slovenia in a penalty shoot-out to advance to the last eight and face France in the quarter-finals.
In the group stage, Portugal ranked first in the group with two wins and one loss and six points; Slovenia, on the other hand, advanced to the round of 16 as one of the four best-performing third-place teams with three points on three straight draws.
