[Saba Sports News] Incidents of discrimination and insults in England football matches increased by 32% last season, with a total of 1,332 reports recorded across all levels of football and social media. Racism accounted for the majority of discrimination cases, making up 47% of the total incidents, which rose from 496 cases in the 2022/23 season to 731 cases. Discrimination based on personal beliefs also increased by 34%, reflecting the growing anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. Reports of discrimination against specific players reached an all-time high, increasing by 43% from 277 to 395. The majority of these cases, 55%, were directed at players of East Asian background. Additionally, incidents of sexism and misogyny against female football players increased by 44%. These statistics highlight the seriousness of discrimination in football, and the increase in reported incidents over the past two seasons raises concerns. It may also indicate fans’ reduced tolerance for discrimination and increased awareness of reporting procedures.
