[Saba Sports News] Lauri Markkanen has been considered a potential trade target for contending teams this summer, but the Utah Jazz star might soon put those rumors to rest.
Markkanen, set to earn $18 million in the final year of his contract next season, will be eligible for an extension on August 6. Tony Jones of The Athletic expects him and the Jazz to reach an agreement, which would prevent any trade this offseason.
During a recent appearance on ESPN700’s “The Drive with Spence Checketts,” Jones mentioned that Markkanen does not want to be traded. The 27-year-old and his family have “taken to Utah,” and he has developed a close relationship with Jazz head coach Will Hardy.
“Will Hardy has unlocked his career in a way no one else has,” Jones said. “Lauri recognizes and appreciates that. He wants to be part of the rebuild.”
If Markkanen signs an extension on August 6, he cannot be traded for six months, taking him to next February’s trade deadline at the earliest. If he signs on August 7 or later, he won’t be eligible for a trade until the next offseason. Jones added that it’s “almost 100 percent” certain Markkanen will sign on August 7 to ensure he can’t be traded for the next year.
Last season, Markkanen averaged 23.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, shooting nearly 40 percent from three-point range. Contending teams see the 7-foot forward as a player with a potential impact similar to Kristaps Porzingis. However, Markkanen has struggled with injuries, missing 43 games over the last two seasons.
One Western Conference team has been keen on acquiring Markkanen, but a deal seems less likely by the day.
