[Saba Sports News] In a surprising twist, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James might end up owning a part of the Boston Celtics.
According to the New York Post, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) is considering a bid for a 49% stake in the Celtics. Since James holds a minority ownership in FSG, he could indirectly own a piece of the Celtics. However, there’s a catch.
Due to a conflict of interest, James can’t be involved in Celtics ownership while still playing. Any ownership stake would be deferred until after his retirement, which could align with the expected completion of the sale in 2028. By then, James would be nearly 44, making it unlikely he’d still be on the court.
LeBron, who became a billionaire in 2022, has openly expressed his ambition to follow Michael Jordan’s footsteps and own an NBA team. However, owning a minority stake in the Celtics through FSG might not satisfy that ambition.
If FSG finalizes the Celtics deal, James might opt to cash out and seek investors to take ownership of an expansion team, potentially in Las Vegas—a city he has praised as having “everything” needed for an NBA franchise.
