[Saba Sports News] Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George has built an impressive NBA career. As a nine-time All-Star, six-time All-NBA team member, and four-time All-Defensive team selection, he overcame a major injury early in his career, crediting a pivotal phone call from Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.
In July 2014, George suffered a severe leg injury during a Team USA scrimmage, shocking the basketball world. It was a challenging road back, but a conversation with Bryant provided George with the support and guidance he needed.
On his podcast, “Podcast P with Paul George,” George and his father, Paul George Sr., discussed that difficult time. George Sr. recalled the moment his son was about to go into surgery when his agent, Aaron Mintz, handed him a phone with Kobe Bryant on the line. After the call, Paul was smiling and said, “I just got through talking to Kobe Bryant.”
Paul George later shared that Kobe’s message was both supportive and realistic. Bryant told him, “Rehab is going to be tough. The work is hard, but you’ve got to approach it like you do the basketball court—find joy in it.” George admitted the advice was a turning point for him, helping him mentally prepare for the grueling rehab ahead.
Kobe’s influence extended far beyond that call, mentoring many players of George’s generation, which is why so many still honor him by wearing his signature Nike shoes on the court.
