[Saba Sports News] NBA free agent Cedi Osman has signed with Panathinaikos in Greece, despite rumors suggesting he turned down a training camp invite from the Lakers. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, no such offer was ever made by L.A., even though LeBron James is known to be a fan of his former Cavaliers teammate.
Osman, who played one season with James in Cleveland, was speculated to have passed on a deal offered to Alex Fudge, but with 15 guaranteed contracts, the Lakers lacked cap space. Stein confirmed the Lakers were already close to the second apron luxury tax, leaving no room for Osman, even if he impressed in camp.
The 29-year-old swingman, who was drafted 31st overall by the Timberwolves in 2015, has played six seasons with Cleveland and one with the Spurs, where he averaged 6.8 points and 38.9% from three last season. Now, Osman hopes his one-year deal with Panathinaikos will serve as a stepping stone to return to the NBA.
Osman described the decision to join Panathinaikos as an easy one, citing familiarity with the team and coach Ergin Ataman from his youth. He’s ready for the next chapter in his career, aiming to make an impact in Greece and possibly the NBA again.
