[Saba Sports News] Claudio Miranda, an Oscar-winning cinematographer, is filming the movie “F1,” directed by Joseph Kosinski. He collaborated with Sony Electronics to develop a custom camera for capturing high-speed shots of actors on F1 tracks. Previously, Miranda used another new technology from Sony—the Rialto system—while working with Kosinski on “Top Gun: Maverick.” This system effectively separates the camera body from the sensor, creating a device that can be installed in tight spaces like an aircraft cockpit to capture the feeling of being inside an airplane. This time, to mount the camera on an F1 car, it needed to be more compact. Miranda told Variety magazine that during “Top Gun: Maverick,” apart from Tom Cruise, none of the actors flew planes; however, in Formula 1 racing, all actors need to drive cars. Therefore, we needed a camera system small enough to ensure we could capture the shots we wanted. These custom cameras were manufactured and installed on Mercedes-Benz cars for filming, with each car equipped with four cameras that need to be remotely controlled for panning and focusing; in certain situations, these cameras need to handle speeds exceeding 200 miles per hour. Currently, the film “F1” is still in production, with upcoming filming locations including Abu Dhabi and Las Vegas; it is tentatively scheduled for release on June 27 next year.
