[Saba Sports News] Mitchell Marsh has been appointed as the captain of Australia’s 14-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against West Indies. This marks the 32-year-old all-rounder’s second stint as captain, following a previous leadership role in South Africa last year.
As Cricket Australia hasn’t yet announced the captain for the T20 World Cup later this year, Marsh’s current role could position him as a potential candidate. Previously, Matthew Wade captained the team in the post-World Cup series against India.
Fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc are being rested for this series due to minor physical issues. They are expected to return for the subsequent series against New Zealand, which is Australia’s final T20 fixture before the World Cup.
Notably absent from the squad is experienced batsman Steve Smith, who is being rested after experimenting as an opener against India. Matt Short, who scored 541 runs in the Big Bash League this season, is likely to open with David Warner. Glenn Maxwell and pace bowler Nathan Ellis rejoin the squad after sitting out the ODIs.
The team will gather on February 7, ahead of the first game in Hobart.
The Australian T20I squad for the West Indies series includes Mitchell Marsh (captain), Sean Abbott, Jason Behrendorff, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Matt Short, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, and Adam Zampa.
