[Saba Sports News] Current Red Bull Racing junior driver Liam Lawson recently shared his thoughts on F1 on social media, asserting that McLaren should play the New Zealand national anthem after a victory, which sparked widespread controversy. Lawson wrote, “McLaren should pay tribute to its founders rather than the location of its headquarters; it is a New Zealand team. Red Bull’s headquarters is in the UK, but they play the Austrian national anthem after winning, even though their team base is in the UK. McLaren’s headquarters is in the UK, but it is a New Zealand team.” McLaren is the second oldest team in F1 history, founded by Bruce McLaren. The team celebrates its victories with the British national anthem because the FIA issues them a British license, and they have always based their operations in the UK throughout their history.
