[Saba Sports News] Current world-ranked 15th American women’s singles player Zhang Beiwen shared her struggles and difficulties over the years on social media about participating in the World Tour, mentioning issues such as financial pressure and lack of logistical support, sparking discussions among fans about the Badminton World Federation’s competition policies. Reportedly, the BWF mandates that top players must participate in 12 to 13 World Tour events each year, excluding team events, with penalties of $5,000 for missing Super 1000 or Super 750 events. Zhang Beiwen has made it onto the “Top Player Obligations” list for 2025, but for her, competing at her own expense is a significant financial burden, and she cannot afford the costs for her coaching team to travel. Zhang Beiwen also criticized the lack of choice for players, stating that they must compete even when not in optimal health. Malaysian badminton legend Lee Chong Wei voiced support for Zhang Beiwen, expressing concern over the BWF’s overly demanding schedule and urging Malaysian players to cherish the strong support system they have. Lee pointed out the significant gap in badminton infrastructure and support between Malaysia and the United States, where badminton is not a mainstream sport. He reminded Malaysian players to be grateful and appreciate the resources they currently have.
