[Saba Sports News] The Dallas Mavericks may be preparing to part ways with one of their longtime stalwarts.
Michael Scotto of HoopsHypereported Monday that veteran forward Maxi Kleber is a potential trade candidate as the Feb. 6 deadline approaches.
The Mavericks are currently $5.3 million over the luxury tax threshold, and moving Kleber—who is owed $11 million this season and the same amount next season—could help ease their financial burden.
Kleber, 32, is the team’s second-longest-tenured player, trailing only Dwight Powell. While his current stats are modest (2.0 points and 3.3 rebounds per game this season, down from 4.4 points and 3.3 rebounds last season), Kleber has long been a reliable contributor.
Known for his defensive versatility at 6-foot-10, he also thrives as a spot-up shooter, hitting 35.6% of his career three-point attempts—often capitalizing on opportunities created by Luka Dončić or Kyrie Irving drawing defensive attention.
Kleber’s impact was particularly evident during last season’s NBA Finals run, where he shot an impressive 42.9% from beyond the arc.
However, with the Mavericks off to a lackluster start this season and financial considerations looming, Dallas may see this as the right time to move on and retool.
