[Saba Sports News] New Zealand driver Liam Lawson has recently replaced two popular F1 drivers and has since faced online abuse from fans. Lawson revealed that he replaced Daniel Ricciardo of the Scuderia AlphaTauri team for the last six races of the 2024 season to test if he deserves a spot on the grid next year. Since then, he has received a barrage of insults online, which shocked him. Despite facing difficulties online, Lawson made a strong impression on Red Bull executives, earning a promotion to the Red Bull Racing team to partner with defending champion Max Verstappen next season. However, after it was confirmed that Lawson would replace Mexican driver Sergio Perez, the hatred directed at him intensified. In an interview with The Times, Lawson discussed his experiences, stating that he really does not want to be on social media anymore. Although he posts in fan groups, he does not scroll or browse messages. Lawson revealed that as a driver, he has prepared himself knowledge-wise for F1 but did not truly anticipate the online abuse, as he has always focused on driving. In addition to criticism from fans online, a current F1 driver, Fernando Alonso from Spain, also made a direct comment about Lawson. At the F1 United States Grand Prix, Alonso criticized Lawson’s driving style, calling him an “idiot.” In response, Lawson stated that he has strong confidence and does not take these criticisms to heart.
