[Saba Sports News] Recently, former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh raised questions about Ravichandran Ashwin’s role in India’s white-ball cricket team. Despite Ashwin’s sporadic presence in the team and his inclusion in the T20 World Cup squads of 2021 and 2022, and as a last-minute addition to the 2023 ODI World Cup squad, Yuvraj critiqued his limited contributions beyond bowling.
He stated, “Ashwin is a great bowler, but I don’t think he deserves a place in ODIs and T20s. He doesn’t contribute much with the bat or as a fielder,” suggesting Ashwin’s suitability is more for Test cricket rather than in the shorter formats.
Additionally, Yuvraj shared his views on the Mumbai Indians’ decision to replace Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as captain for the upcoming IPL season. He emphasized that franchise cricket often prioritizes long-term planning and youth, a situation he personally experienced.
While acknowledging Rohit’s extensive experience and accomplishments, Yuvraj noted the inevitable shift towards younger players in franchise strategies, stating, “In franchise cricket, it always gets tough as you get old. Every franchise is always looking to promote a young player… But then, there can’t be a replacement for experience.”
