[Saba Sports News] F1 teams have recognized the importance of having a reserve driver in a season with 24 Grands Prix, as the absence of a main driver cannot be ruled out. Last year, Oliver Bearman seized an opportunity at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, marking a turning point in his career when he replaced Kevin Magnussen, who had accumulated 12 points on his super license. With six young drivers moving into main driver positions for the 2025 season, many teams are re-evaluating their plans. Having an experienced reserve driver allows teams to manage risk more effectively. In recent weeks, Zhou Guanyu’s phone has been ringing frequently, indicating the need for a seasoned driver who can focus solely on driving. Italian motorsport has revealed that Zhou Guanyu is likely to become Ferrari’s reserve driver. With Robert Shwartzman ending his collaboration with Ferrari, the team has promoted Arthur Leclerc and Antonio Fuoco as reference “rookies” to share FP1 sessions. Antonio Giovinazzi holds the role of reserve driver but will participate in all WEC championships, which may prevent him from attending F1 Grands Prix on certain weekends. Ferrari is in urgent need of a driver with F1 experience to alternate with Giovinazzi, and Zhou Guanyu fits this requirement.
