[Saba Sports News] Nazmul Hasan, the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), is preparing to leave his role after completing his current term. This follows his recent appointment as the Minister of Youth and Sports on January 11, having been elected to the parliament on January 7.
Questions arose about Hasan’s ability to simultaneously hold the positions of BCB president, a role he’s held since 2012, and Minister of Youth and Sports. Addressing these concerns, Hasan stated, “There are no problems in the law about me holding both posts… But it would be good if that is not the case because then there might be speculations of me prioritizing cricket. I want to prioritize everything (being the Minister of Sports).”
Despite his willingness, Hasan is obligated to complete his current tenure with BCB. He cited instances of other countries like Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka where premature departures led to complications. Hasan plans to consult with the ICC, considering the importance of completing elected terms and his involvement in various committees, including chairing one. He aims for a smooth transition, possibly coinciding with the end of the current ICC board’s term.
The next BCB elections are scheduled for October 2025. If Hasan steps down immediately, an existing BCB member will assume interim leadership. As per BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury, the process to become president involves being a councillor, then a director through election, and finally being elected president from among the directors.
Hasan first led BCB in 2012 and was re-elected twice without opposition in 2013 and 2017. However, he chose to go through an election for his current term, moving away from the panel system.
