ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the NBA has declined the Knicks’ request for a $7.8 million disabled player exception (DPE) following the injury of center Mitchell Robinson. This decision stems from growing optimism that Robinson could return later in the regular season.
Robinson, a 25-year-old center known for his shot-blocking and athleticism, suffered an ankle injury last month, necessitating surgery. This was a significant setback for Robinson, as reflected in his emotional message about the injury. The Knicks had sought the DPE anticipating that Robinson would miss the entire season.
With the NBA’s denial, the Knicks won’t be able to sign an additional center for temporary support. However, the silver lining is the possibility of Robinson returning for the crucial late-season push and potentially the playoffs.
In the meantime, Isaiah Hartenstein, who has stepped up superbly in Robinson’s absence, and recent acquisition Precious Achiuwa will continue to anchor the center position.
