[Saba Sports News] The Dallas Mavericks’ shocking trade of Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers stunned the entire sports world—including Mavs legend Dirk Nowitzki. Speaking at an event hosted by *96.7 The Ticket* (via NBA insider Marc Stein), Nowitzki admitted he was in disbelief over the deal.
“I really couldn’t believe it,” Nowitzki said, echoing the sentiments of countless Mavericks fans.
Despite the move, Nowitzki remains a steadfast supporter of Dončić. However, he made it clear that his loyalty to Dallas won’t waver.
“I’ll never be a Laker fan, but I’ll always be a Luka fan,” Nowitzki stated. “I’m happy I went to support him.”
Dončić’s start in Los Angeles has been far from smooth. Through three games, he’s averaging just 14.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 5.3 assists while shooting a dismal 35.6% from the field and 20.8% from deep. It’s worth noting that he was on a minutes restriction for two of those games.
While his numbers are a far cry from his dominant days in Dallas, Dončić remains one of the league’s most talented players. Adjusting to a new system takes time, and the Lakers are still learning how to integrate him into their offense.
Meanwhile, Mavericks fans can take comfort in knowing that Nowitzki, whose statue stands outside the American Airlines Center, will continue to stand by his beloved franchise—no matter where Dončić plays.
