[Saba Sports News] Afghanistan, after their commendable ODI World Cup run, is set to face India in a T20I series starting January 11, revealed head coach Jonathan Trott in an exclusive interview with JioCinema.
Trott highlighted their focus on playing quality cricket in India, with an eye on the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Caribbean. With nine games lined up and more sought, the aim is to be well-prepared for the World Cup.
Discussing the challenge of facing Indian stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Trott acknowledged their world-class status. He noted that many Afghan players have IPL experience against them, and plans are in place to counter their threat effectively.
On stopping India, Trott emphasized improving in all game aspects and seizing key moments under pressure, a focus of their current practice sessions.
Addressing Rashid Khan’s absence, Trott views it as an opportunity for others to step up and make a mark, despite missing Rashid’s leadership and skill.
Reflecting on the 2023 World Cup, Trott believes the team gained confidence and belief from beating top teams, which they hope to carry into T20s and other formats. Moving beyond the World Cup, the focus is on future success.
Looking ahead to the T20 World Cup 2024, Trott pointed out Afghanistan’s familiarity with T20s, stressing the need for the right player combinations and adaptability in varying conditions, beyond their traditional reliance on spin bowling.
Finally, Trott described his journey with the team as a mix of highs and lows. He believes the World Cup was a positive learning experience, showing potential for more victories. The next 12 months are seen as crucial and exciting for Afghanistan’s cricket.
