West Ham United leads Ipswich Town, who are in the relegation zone, by as much as 14 points, essentially securing their survival in the league. Due to poor initial performance, the team brought in former Chelsea manager Graham Potter to take the helm. Potter’s tactical innovations are beginning to show signs, shifting from the previous manager’s four-man defense to a three-center back structure. This change not only strengthens the defensive width but also creates space for wing-backs to move forward. Under Potter’s tactics, Jarrod Bowen’s break-through on the wings and Lucas Paqueta’s midfield linking play have been outstanding, creating numerous scoring opportunities for the team. However, it is regrettable that the forwards have been poor at converting chances. With the two main strikers, Michail Antonio and Niclas Fullkrug, injured in succession, Potter had to play the 5’10” Mohammed Kudus as a makeshift center forward, which diminished the team’s aerial tactics. To address the issue of a lack of firepower up front, the team brought in Evan Ferguson on loan during the winter transfer window. He is a center forward with the ability to act as a pivot, capable of performing tasks in the front line linking play. More favorably, Fullkrug has returned in the last league match, providing an alternative plan for Potter’s tactics and enhancing the team’s offensive power.
Bournemouth has been in poor form lately, without a win in five league games, and lost to Ipswich, who are in the relegation zone, in the middle of the week. Currently, the team’s points are stuck at 44. Although they have secured their survival, they find it difficult to challenge for European qualification next season. Since the main striker Dominic Solanke transferred to Tottenham Hotspur, Bournemouth has lacked an offensive core in their lineup. The current top scorer in the team is Justin Kluivert, who has only scored 12 league goals, which is a significant difference compared to Solanke’s performance last season. The main reasons for Bournemouth’s recent decline in performance are twofold. First, there has been a significant drop in offensive power. In the first 25 league games, Bournemouth scored a total of 44 goals, averaging 1.76 goals per game; however, in the last five league games, they have only scored five goals, with the average dropping to one goal per game. Compared to the impressive attack performance in the early season, Bournemouth has shown mediocrity in the latter half of the league. The second reason is the poor physical condition of the players due to continuous battles. After entering February, Bournemouth played three more rounds of the FA Cup than West Ham United. In Bournemouth’s tactics, they often disrupt the opponent’s passing routes or disrupt their offensive organization through large-scale pressing, which greatly depends on the players’ physical condition. Once the players’ physical condition declines, the team’s zonal defense strategy becomes ineffective, and the number of mistakes increases.
In the high-intensity competitive environment of the Premier League, player physical consumption is definitely higher than in other leagues. Bournemouth has one less day of preparation than West Ham United, and the physical shortcomings of the players are apparent. In this match, it is advisable to support West Ham United to snatch points at home.
