[Saba Sports News] Charles Barkley proved once again that he’s Auburn through and through—win or lose.
The NBA Hall of Famer and proud Auburn alum went viral Saturday night for a classy moment following the Tigers’ Final Four loss to Florida. While working on-site for CBS Sports, Barkley was seen waiting in the tunnel as Auburn players exited the court.
When star forward Johni Broome passed by, Barkley stepped forward to offer a comforting gesture and what appeared to be an encouraging message.
Barkley, who played for Auburn from 1981 to 1984, was clearly emotionally invested in the outcome. Cameras caught him reacting with visible frustration as Auburn’s chances slipped away in the final minutes.
Despite the tough loss, Barkley made it a point to acknowledge Broome and the team for an impressive season.
Broome, the SEC Player of the Year, had been a standout for the Tigers throughout the tournament—battling through injury in the Elite Eight to deliver a 25-point, 14-rebound performance in a win.
Against fellow No. 1 seed Florida, Broome tallied 15 points and seven rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to carry Auburn to the title game. Still, Barkley reminded him to keep his head up, especially with a likely NBA future ahead—Broome is currently projected as a late first-round pick in the upcoming draft.
