[Saba Sports News] Luka Doncic never wanted to leave the Dallas Mavericks—and Wednesday night served as a powerful reminder of that.
Making his first appearance back at the American Airlines Center since being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, Doncic was met with an emotional welcome. During pregame introductions, the Mavericks saved him for last, pairing his name with a heartfelt two-minute tribute video honoring his six-and-a-half seasons with the team.
The video, filled with iconic highlights and personal moments, was almost too much for Doncic to take in. Cameras caught him visibly emotional, wiping away tears with a towel as the footage rolled.
Despite being just 26 years old, Doncic built an extraordinary legacy in Dallas: five All-Star selections, five All-NBA First Team honors, a scoring title in 2023-24, and a Finals run in 2024. He was seen as a franchise cornerstone—destined to follow in Dirk Nowitzki’s footsteps as a Maverick for life.
That made his trade all the more shocking. Doncic had even recently made a major investment in Dallas before the deal went down, a city he clearly still holds close to his heart.
While Doncic looks to the future in Los Angeles, many Mavericks fans continue to criticize the team’s front office—particularly GM Nico Harrison—for pulling the trigger on one of the most unpopular trades in franchise history.
