[Saba Sports News] The “Shaquille O’Neal effect” is already making waves at Sacramento State.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, former top high school prospect Mikey Williams has committed to transfer to Sacramento State.
The 20-year-old guard, who entered the transfer portal last month, spent last season at UCF, where he averaged 5.1 points and 0.7 assists in limited minutes.
Once a consensus four-star recruit, Williams was a standout at San Ysidro High School in San Diego, averaging 26.9 points and 6.4 assists per game. He originally committed to Memphis under Penny Hardaway but never played a game due to legal issues.
In 2023, Williams was arrested and faced five felony charges stemming from an alleged shooting incident. He avoided jail time through a plea deal, agreeing to community service, anger management, and gun safety classes.
Now aiming to revive his career, Williams joins a Sacramento State program that’s undergone a major transformation.
The Hornets recently added Shaquille O’Neal’s son, Shaqir O’Neal, via the transfer portal, and earlier this week, Shaq himself took on a leadership role in the school’s front office. With a former NBA guard already in place as head coach, Sacramento State is quickly becoming a magnet for high-profile talent.
