[Saba Sports News] Ricky Rubio, in a heartfelt statement on his X account, declared his retirement from the NBA on Thursday. Last summer, he had already paused his basketball career due to mental health concerns, leading to a recent contract buyout agreement with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
He expressed a desire to share his full experience in the future to help others, but for now, he wishes to keep the details private for his and his family’s sake, as he continues to work on his mental health.
In his retirement announcement, Rubio shared some insights into his struggles. “July 30th was one of the toughest nights of my life. I never thought I’d lose control, but my mind went to a dark place. The next day, I chose to halt my professional career,” he wrote. “One day, when the time is right, I would love to share my full experience with you all so I can help support others going through similar situations. Until then, I would like to keep it private out of respect for my family and myself, as I’m still working on my mental health. But I’m proud to say I’m doing much better and getting better everyday.
“I wanted to post this message for you today because my NBA career has come to an end. “It all started on June 2009, draft night in New York. What a dream. After playing 12 years in the league, with all its up and downs, I have collected lots of good memories and great relationships. Minnesota, Utah, Phoenix and Cleveland. Wow. Thank you! “Special mention to Cleveland. My last home. I know the way things ended have been tough. I could never have imagined the year would develop this way, but you have an amazing organizzation, with Koby and JB, who have been extremely respectful and understanding of my situation and caring for me as a person. “Thank you all for the love and support.”
Rubio reflected on his NBA journey, starting with his draft night in June 2009, and acknowledged the highs and lows of his 12-year career with teams including Minnesota, Utah, Phoenix, and Cleveland. He gave special thanks to Cleveland, his last team, praising the organization’s respect and understanding of his situation.
Rubio, the fifth overall pick in the 2009 draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, has averaged 10.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 1.8 steals per game throughout his career. His career faced challenges following his second torn ACL in 2021, limiting him to 33 games post-injury.
He is set to receive $6.1 million this season, with a partial guarantee of $4.25 million for the next. The specifics of his buyout remain undisclosed.
