[Saba Sports News] The Cleveland Cavaliers’ early playoff exit left the entire organization reeling — including team owner Dan Gilbert, who had gone all-in on a deep postseason run.
According to Jason Lloyd of The Athletic, Gilbert spent $500,000 installing fake snow machines in the ceiling at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. The machines were designed to shower fans with confetti during explosive scoring runs, dubbed “Cavalanches” during the regular season.
Unfortunately for Gilbert, the Cavaliers’ playoff struggles rendered the investment almost entirely moot. The snow machines were only used once — during Game 2 of Cleveland’s first-round series against the Miami Heat, a game the Cavs won en route to a sweep.
Given Cleveland’s 64-win regular season and dominant first-round showing, Gilbert’s optimism wasn’t unfounded. But the Cavs faltered in the second round, collapsing against the Indiana Pacers in five games and infamously blowing a seven-point lead in the final minute of Game 2.
While Gilbert’s confetti splash may have looked cool in theory, it now stands as a symbol of a postseason that fell far short of expectations. He’s not alone — the entire franchise is left searching for answers after a playoff run that fizzled out far too soon.
