[Saba Sports News] Dean Elgar is now a former South Africa cricketer. The 36-year-old played his final international game in the form of a Test match against India that lasted only five sessions.
Although Elgar did not contribute much with the bat in the second Test, he scored a hundred in Centurion, ending the series as the top-scorer with 201 runs. He was also given the Player of the Series award along with Jasprit Bumrah.
The two-match series ended in a draw as India won the Cape Town Test by three wickets, bouncing back from an innings defeat they suffered in Centurion.
Speaking at the end of his farewell game, Elgar expressed that he hoped the series to be a three-match affair.
He also heaped praises on the Indian bowlers, finding solace in the fact that he would no longer have to face them.
“I would have liked to do more in this game. Still very proud of my performance I had in Centurion. Nice to contribute to a winning cause. Some really tough conditions throughout. It (3-Test series) would have been fantastic,” Elgar said as quoted in the post-match presentation.
“You want to challenge yourself, Bumrah is world-class, he deserves this award. You want to push yourself to limits. Glad that I don’t have to face these guys again. Fond memories. We’ve come a long way. Very grateful to play against these guys. A lot of good memories, I received it (green cap) in 2012, I have missed only one series. It’s got a special place. Only leaves for duty, that’s done and dusted,” he added.
