[Saba Sports News] Chris Paul may be shifting from mentoring one top draft pick to another.
According to Sam Amico of Hoops Wire, the Portland Trail Blazers are among the teams with interest in signing the 12-time All-Star guard. The Blazers are reportedly looking to bring in a veteran presence to help guide 21-year-old Scoot Henderson, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Paul, now 40, spent the past season with the San Antonio Spurs, where he posted averages of 8.8 points and 7.4 assists while starting all 82 games—a testament to his durability and leadership.
However, a recent report suggested Paul is unlikely to return to San Antonio as he enters unrestricted free agency this summer.
While Portland isn’t in the title-contending conversation after finishing 36-46, it was a notable step forward from their 21-61 campaign the year prior.
Though the Blazers can’t offer Paul a shot at a championship, it’s possible that, like his decision to join the Spurs last offseason, Paul is prioritizing mentorship and stability over title aspirations at this stage in his career.
Portland may also have an edge financially. The team currently projects around $170 million in salary commitments for next season and could clear additional space by declining a few team options—giving them room to make a competitive offer for Paul.
Still, luring the 11-time All-NBA selection won’t be easy. Paul is reportedly drawing interest from at least one team that’s both closer to home and more competitive, which could sway his decision.
