[Saba Sports News] Indiana Pacers forward Pascal Siakam had a heated exchange with a reporter following his team’s Game 5 loss to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals on Thursday night.
The Knicks extended their season with a 111-94 win at Madison Square Garden, cutting Indiana’s series lead to 3-2. Siakam contributed 15 points and 6 rebounds but acknowledged in his postgame press conference that New York simply “played harder,” especially when it came to loose balls and rebounding.
That comment drew a challenge from Indianapolis Star columnist Gregg Doyel, who questioned how a team could fall short on effort in such a high-stakes playoff setting. Siakam appeared confused by the implication.
“What are you talking about?” he replied. “They played harder than us. It’s okay. We played hard, but they played harder. What’s your point? I don’t get it.”
Doyel pressed further, asking how a team could fail to match its opponent’s intensity in the Eastern Conference Finals.
“That happens in the game, though. That’s basketball,” Siakam responded. “You good? You good, bro? You’re looking for something, I know, but damn. I told you. What else do you want me to tell you?”
The tense back-and-forth suggested that Siakam felt Doyel’s line of questioning was less about clarity and more about confrontation. While Doyel’s underlying point—that both teams should be going all-out in a playoff game—may be valid, human nature and game dynamics can shift intensity levels, especially with Indiana holding a 3-1 series cushion and the Knicks desperate to stay alive on their home floor.
Siakam will have a chance to respond on the court in Game 6. As for Doyel, he has a track record of awkward exchanges with athletes, including a past suspension for an uncomfortable incident involving Caitlin Clark.
