[Saba Sports News] Victor Wembanyama is continuing to fully embrace his monk retreat—and it’s turning into one of the more intriguing off-court storylines as the NBA Finals play out.
The San Antonio Spurs superstar has been on a 10-day spiritual retreat at a Shaolin temple, and it’s caught the attention of fans around the world. Last week, viral photos showed Wembanyama in full monk attire with a freshly shaved head, prompting a wave of reactions on social media.
According to FOX San Antonio’s Dusty Garza, Wembanyama is “deeply interested” in Shaolin culture and is fully committed to the experience. But even while unplugging from the NBA spotlight, he hasn’t taken a break from training.
New footage from the retreat surfaced Tuesday, showing the 21-year-old Spurs center out for a jog—proving that he’s still maintaining his conditioning during the getaway.
Some had initially questioned whether the viral photos were authentic, given how surreal the image of a bald-headed Wemby looked. But with the new video footage, it’s clear the man in monk robes is unmistakably Wembanyama.
This retreat could be Wemby’s way of resetting mentally before what’s shaping up to be a critical year in his young career. With two seasons now behind him, the next step is clear: leading the Spurs to the playoffs for the first time since his arrival.
San Antonio has already made a major move by acquiring All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox to pair with Wembanyama. The front office may not be done yet, with rumors suggesting the team could target one more high-impact player to complete a potential Big Three.
