[Saba Sports News] Russell Westbrook is officially betting on himself.
The former MVP has opted to decline his $3.5 million player option for next season with the Denver Nuggets, according to veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein. The decision clears the way for Westbrook to enter unrestricted free agency this summer.
At 36 years old, Westbrook is coming off a solid season in Denver, where he earned $3.3 million and posted averages of 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game.
He also shot 32.3 percent from three-point range — tied for the third-best mark of his career. Given his production, Westbrook is expected to draw interest on the open market and potentially secure a more lucrative deal.
