[Saba Sports News] As rumors intensify regarding Max Verstappen potentially transferring to Mercedes, George Russell’s future has become uncertain. Although Russell himself has stated that the likelihood of leaving Mercedes next season is very low, he has yet to receive a contract renewal, fueling speculation about his next move.
Aston Martin has often been seen as a backup option for Russell, but team principal Andy Cowell’s comments at the British Grand Prix have dampened those hopes. Cowell clearly stated that the team is satisfied with their lineup of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, and both drivers are involved in the core development of the new car for 2026. They have not only participated in vehicle development but also provided critical input on details like cockpit design, emphasizing the importance of stability for the team. This essentially rules out the possibility of Aston Martin offering a seat to Russell, especially considering that starting in 2026, the team will collaborate with Honda to use a new engine, and Adrian Newey is already developing the 2026 car, which requires full participation and feedback from the drivers.
On the other hand, internal competition at Mercedes cannot be overlooked, as Russell’s position is being threatened by Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Although Antonelli has not received a new contract, he has already been identified by team principal Toto Wolff as a key part of the future, and there is a possibility that Mercedes might pair him with Verstappen. If Verstappen joins Mercedes and takes a seat, Russell could find himself in a very awkward situation.
