FC Porto is a traditional powerhouse in the Primeira Liga and participated in the FIFA Club World Cup held in June this year. Thanks to the substantial prize money from the Club World Cup, Porto has made significant investments in the summer transfer window, spending a total of 88.6 million euros on transfers. Some of the players have experiences in the top European leagues, such as Juventus right-back Alberto Costa, former Barcelona forward Luuk de Jong, Southampton’s starting center-back Jan Bednarek, and former Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga. In addition, their forward signings are also worth noting. Borja Sainz, who plays for Norwich City, was the second-highest scorer in the EFL Championship last season with 18 goals and four assists. The current squad includes 12 Portuguese players and four Spanish players, reflecting the new manager Francesco Farioli’s strategy to build a skill-oriented team, aiming to strengthen midfield control and increase the speed of wing attacks.
Vitoria de Guimaraes has long been a “spoiler” in the Primeira Liga, consistently finishing between fifth and seventh in recent seasons. In the summer transfer window, the team has lost key players across all positions, including attacking midfielder Joao Mendes (who played 32 matches last season), forward Jesus Ramirez (25 appearances), and center-back Mikel Villanueva (19 appearances). So far, the club has spent 3.7 million euros on transfers. Besides 31-year-old center-back Rodrigo Abascal, the rest of the signings are mostly young prospects, which may not provide immediate impact on the pitch. To help integrate the new players, the team has arranged a total of 11 friendly matches since early July. However, such frequent matches might lead to young players developing a sense of fatigue or disinterest at the start of the season.
On August 5, 53-year-old former Portuguese international, Porto legend, and current Porto football director Jorge Costa passed away due to a cardiac arrest. Before the match, a solemn memorial ceremony will be held at the Estadio do Dragao. For the Porto players, this match carries great significance, and they are expected to give their all in order to honor their captain.
