[Saba Sports News] Despite having star players like Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, the Phoenix Suns’ performance this season, with a 14-15 record, has fallen short of expectations. Paul Pierce, speaking on ‘KG Certified,’ expressed concern about their status as contenders in the Western Conference. He cited issues with depth, injuries, and the team’s identity as major challenges.
“Their biggest problem is their depth,” Pierce noted, pointing out that in their quest for star power, the Suns compromised their supporting cast, which was crucial in their previous Finals run. The replacements haven’t lived up to expectations, resulting in a team heavily reliant on Durant and Booker’s performances.
In terms of star acquisition, Suns owner Mat Ishbia went all-in by securing Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, hoping to form a formidable trio. However, Beal has been sidelined by injuries for most of the season, contributing to the team’s struggles.
Durant, despite his impressive averages of 30.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game on 51.8% shooting, hasn’t been able to single-handedly turn the team’s fortunes around. There are rumors of Durant growing impatient with the situation, though he hasn’t indicated a desire to request a third career trade.
The Suns, burdened by high expectations and the financial costs of their star-studded lineup, are currently in a precarious position, trying to find their footing in the competitive Western Conference.
