Tottenham Hotspur, last season’s Europa League champions, qualified for the UEFA Champions League this season. However, due to a disappointing league performance (finishing 17th), manager Ange Postecoglou was dismissed at the end of the season. This summer, the club appointed Brentford manager Thomas Frank as the new head coach. Under Frank’s leadership, Tottenham embarked on a rebuilding phase: Captain Heung-min Son, defensive midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and defender Sergio Reguilon were sold, while the club invested €146 million in new signings. These include West Ham United winger Mohammed Kudus, Japanese international center-back Kota Takai, and the loan of Bayern Munich defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha. Overall, the squad’s strength remains similar to last season. After two league matches, Tottenham has secured two consecutive wins, including an impressive away victory against title contenders Manchester City, demonstrating strong form. Brennan Johnson and Richarlison have each scored two goals, adapting well to Frank’s new tactics. Frank’s managerial skills have been widely praised by media and fans.
Last season, AFC Bournemouth achieved a commendable ninth-place finish, missing European qualification by just nine points. Unfortunately, this summer, the club did not invest significantly but instead sold key players. Key departures include center-back Ilya Zabarnyi (35 starts), center-back Dean Huijsen (26 starts), ever-present left-back Milos Kerkez, and winger Dango Ouattara (32 appearances, seven goals, four assists). As a result, the defensive line requires rebuilding. For defensive reinforcements, the club opted to sign players from Ligue 1: 24-year-old center-back Bafode Diakite from Lille and 23-year-old left-back Adrien Truffert from Rennes. So far, Bournemouth has generated a profit of €113 million in the transfer market, making them the Premier League’s highest-earning club this summer. However, their overall strength has significantly declined compared to last season.
Bournemouth had a EFL Cup match this midweek, fielding a full-strength lineup but suffering a home defeat to Brentford, which dampened morale. In contrast, Tottenham had no cup commitments and enjoyed more preparation time. In their first two league matches, Tottenham generated 28 shots, showing increasingly cohesive attacking play. Facing a Bournemouth side with a reconfigured defense and fitness issues, Tottenham is expected to seize the opportunity to secure all three points at home.
