[Saba Sports News] Recently, two-time Olympic men’s singles gold medalist, Danish superstar Viktor Axelsen, declined the invitation to the “2025 King Cup International Badminton Open” initiated by Lin Dan, citing a “conflict with his plans.” Another Danish player, Anders Antonsen, gladly accepted Lin Dan’s invitation. External speculation suggests that Axelsen’s refusal of the King Cup might be related to the argument he had with Shi Yuqi during the Denmark Open. The King Cup is a rare international major tournament not affiliated with the BWF. Although it offers no world ranking points, the participation of the sport’s GOAT, Lin Dan, and very substantial prize money can attract world-class players. This badminton event, focused solely on men’s singles, aims to build a super IP and provide higher income and exposure for top men’s singles players from various countries. The first King Cup was held grandly in Shenzhen last December, where Danish star Anders Antonsen ultimately won the championship, receiving a massive 1.1 million RMB prize. As the defending champion this year, he was very happy to receive Lin Dan’s invitation. The King Cup features only eight players in a knockout format, meaning only three wins are needed to claim the 1.1 million RMB, making it highly attractive. Despite the appeal, Axelsen politely declined Lin Dan’s offer, stating it “didn’t fit his plans.” However, many speculate this is a false reason. The real reason is believed to be the intense argument between Axelsen and Shi Yuqi during the Denmark Open. His Chinese social media was flooded by Chinese fans, and if there were boos from Chinese fans at the event, Axelsen might feel embarrassed.
