[Saba Sports News] Following the illegal fireworks set off by a group of radical fans in the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) stands during a recent Coupe de France match, the club was handed a punishment of partial stand closure. The news has sparked widespread discontent among a large number of supporters. According to the latest reports, PSG fan groups are planning to stage a collective protest against this penalty.
The fan organizations argue that the PSG management failed to actively speak up for the fans amid the penalty incident; instead, it tacitly consented to the league’s harsh sanctions. This has led to a significant erosion of trust between the fans and the club.
From this writer’s perspective, the punishment of closing part of the stands is not without merit. The setting off of fireworks and the chanting of inappropriate slogans not only violated stadium regulations but also repeatedly disrupted match order, which is in line with the basic logic of disciplinary sanctions. However, the core of the controversy lies in the consistency of penalty standards. Similar violations by different clubs have been met with vastly different disciplinary measures. What’s more, the penalty method ignores the cultural significance of the affected stands and inadvertently hurts the feelings of loyal fans.
