[Saba Sports News] According to British media reports, Chelsea defender Levi Colwill recently returned to his hometown of Southampton and partnered with a British educational technology platform to officially launch a national reading promotion programme for children. Against the grim situation where children’s reading engagement in the UK has dropped to a record low, with only one in five children reading daily, the programme announced it would provide all primary schools across the UK with one year of free access to a digital platform featuring thousands of high-quality e-books. During a visit to St Mary’s School, where his family once studied, Colwill personally attended an assembly to launch the national reading challenge. He expressed his hope that the partnership would help build confidence among the younger generation. Currently, all primary schools in the UK can join the programme for free using their school email addresses, with no contract required.
The editor believes that Colwill emphasized through his personal growth experience that while a professional football dream is certainly attractive, education and literacy are fundamental to creating life opportunities. It is hoped that this program will remove the economic and physical barriers children face in accessing books, reignite primary school pupils’ love for reading, and thus improve overall literacy standards.
