[Saba Sports News] Following a serious accident at the Japanese Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri has publicly called on the FIA to revise the rules as soon as possible to prevent similar incidents from recurring. In a recent interview, he revealed that he also experienced a “very close call” at Suzuka, further raising concerns over the safety of the new regulations. The accident occurred during the race when Oliver Bearman lost control and crashed at high speed through Spoon Curve. Fortunately, he was unharmed. The FIA later confirmed that under the current energy deployment and recovery system, cars can create significant speed differentials on track, which has been identified as one of the key contributing factors to the crash. In fact, similar risks had already emerged during practice. Piastri received an official warning for impeding Nico Hülkenberg in the third practice session. He had adjusted his line ahead of the 130R corner but did not expect the other car to approach at a far greater speed than anticipated. He later stated that the closing speed was almost three times what he had judged, with both cars at full throttle, making the situation extremely dangerous. Piastri pointed out that under the current rules, cars can be in different phases of energy deployment or recovery at the same time, drastically widening speed differences on the straights.
In our view, dangerous situations are frequently occurring in sections where large speed differentials should not normally exist, making it difficult for drivers to react and judge accurately in time. This is not merely a matter of driving adaptation, but a hazard that must be addressed at a regulatory level.
