The 2026 Thomas Cup & Uber Cup will be held in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24 to May 3. As long-standing team competitions in badminton, the Thomas and Uber Cups have witnessed countless classic clashes since their founding in 1949. The Thomas Cup stands for the highest honour in men’s team badminton, while the Uber Cup symbolises the pinnacle of women’s team badminton. Hosted by Denmark, this edition marks the tournament’s return to Danish soil after a five-year absence, bringing together the world’s top badminton players to compete for national team glory.
At the previous edition held in Chengdu, China claimed its 11th Thomas Cup and 16th Uber Cup titles in history. In the Thomas Cup, the Chinese men’s team secured five consecutive championships from 2004 to 2012 and have lifted the trophy twice in the past six tournaments. Led by their key players, the Chinese team will travel to Denmark with the sole goal of defending both the men’s and women’s team titles. China has been drawn into Group A of the 2026 Thomas Cup, alongside India, Canada and Australia. Barring upsets, China and India are expected to advance from the group, and their head-to-head clash in the final group stage match will decide the group winner, securing a favourable knockout-stage seeding. Notably, Shi Yuqi, newly crowned men’s singles champion at this month’s Asian Badminton Championships and currently the world No.1, will feature as China’s first singles player, serving as the core point scorer for the defending champions.
As the host nation, Denmark is widely recognised as a dominant European badminton powerhouse with an impressive international track record. In the 2016 Thomas Cup final, Denmark defeated Indonesia 3-2 to become the first European nation ever to win the prestigious men’s team trophy. Ahead of this year’s Thomas and Uber Cups, Danish badminton received sad news: 32-year-old two-time Olympic men’s singles champion Viktor Axelsen has officially announced his retirement due to recurring long-term lower back injuries. While Axelsen’s departure is deeply regrettable, Denmark still boasts a formidable squad and will aim high for title glory on home soil. For the Thomas Cup, the Danish men’s singles line-up is led by world-ranked top player Anders Antonsen, with support from Magnus Johannesen and Rasmus Gemke. In the Uber Cup, key players including Mia Blichfeldt and Line Christophersen will spearhead the Danish women’s team to challenge the world’s leading sides. Boasting a balanced mix of seasoned veterans and emerging talents, the home side will go all out in pursuit of another historic title.
A total of 16 men’s teams and 16 women’s teams will compete in this year’s Thomas and Uber Cups, divided into four groups for round-robin play.
