[Saba Sports News] On May 5th, the Thomas & Uber Cup concluded. Malaysian men’s singles independent shuttler Lee Zii Jia stated clearly in an interview with Bernama that he has no intention of making a full-time return to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). However, he hopes to return to the Academy Badminton Malaysia on a regular basis for practice matches on a part-time basis. While maintaining his own independent training system, he aims to break through his current career bottleneck with the help of high-level sparring sessions.
Currently ranked 82nd in the world, Lee Zii Jia enjoyed a rewarding campaign at this year’s Thomas Cup. Ahead of the tournament, he briefly joined national team players for practice matches at the Academy Badminton Malaysia and went on a training camp with the squad in Herning, Denmark. This stint proved crucial to his resurgence in form.
He competed as the third men’s singles in the group stage and remained unbeaten in all three ties. He also claimed a straight-sets victory over world No.20 Japanese ace Watanabe Koki, emerging as Malaysia’s most outstanding player at the tournament. Unfortunately, Malaysia was swept 0-3 by defending champions China in the quarter-finals. Lee Zii Jia was scheduled to feature in the final match, but the game never took place, robbing him of a chance to further prove his worth.
In the editor’s opinion, Lee Zii Jia’s request reflects professional athletes’ dual pursuit of career autonomy and competitive efficiency. His proposal is logically feasible and has gained recognition from authoritative figures within Malaysia’s badminton circle.
