[Saba Sports News] FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has recently stated publicly that Formula 1 is expected to reintroduce V8 engines around 2030, while significantly reducing the proportion of electric power. His remarks have ignited enthusiasm among fans, who are looking forward to the return of the classic engine soundtrack.
However, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff stressed that F1 cannot simply turn back the clock, nor should it rely entirely on internal combustion engines. Wolff admitted he is still a big fan of V8 power units, which stand for purity and passion. Nevertheless, a full return to the purely fuel-powered era would leave F1 out of touch with the real world by 2030 or 2031.
In his view, the global automotive industry is accelerating its shift toward electrification. As a global technological benchmark, F1 must stay aligned with industry trends. Therefore, Wolff proposed that future power units could retain the V8 configuration while further strengthening rather than weakening the role of the electric hybrid system. The key lies in striking a balance that keeps the cars simple, powerful and future-proof. He even envisaged creating a more spectacular powerhouse by having the internal combustion engine produce around 800 horsepower, supplemented by several hundred horsepower from the electric component.
In the editor’s opinion, Wolff prefers gradual evolution over radical overhauls. He suggests avoiding sweeping regulatory changes before the end of the current rules cycle, while supporting targeted fine-tuning. For instance, boosting the performance of the straight-line speed boost mode to enhance on-track spectacle and entertainment value.
