[Saba Sports News] Only four races into the 2026 season under the new regulations, drivers have already built up deep dissatisfaction with this new-generation Formula 1 cars. While the public is still debating whether the new rules are a success or failure, Mercedes driver George Russell has already set his sights on the next round of regulatory changes, and has even publicly called on F1 to bring back the V8 engines.
Since the start of the new rules era, major changes have taken place in the cars’ powertrain, aerodynamics and energy management — yet not everyone inside the paddock is satisfied with the shift. Previously, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem publicly stated that F1 could potentially reintroduce V8 engines around 2030, a comment that quickly sparked heated discussions among drivers and fans.
When asked about what the next generation of F1 should look like, Russell gave a straightforward answer. He admitted that the return of the V8 would be an incredible move, while stressing that sustainable fuel should remain a key direction for Formula 1’s future. Beyond the powertrain, Russell also highlighted the growing weight of modern F1 cars. In his view, reducing car weight has become a core issue that F1 must address going forward. Although overtaking is still possible with the current machinery, the excessive weight has begun to harm handling and close-quarters racing ability.
In the editor’s opinion, if Formula 1 does reinstate V8 engines, it will be a comprehensive decision made by the FIA based on cost control, race spectacle and the inherent essence of the sport — rather than being driven solely by suggestions from individual drivers such as Russell.
