[Saba Sports News] Former Williams F1 driver Robert Józef Kubica has never stepped away from motorsport after retiring from single-seater racing. He will compete in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) for AF Corse.
In a recent interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, he talked about his long-standing connection with Ferrari. Kubica once had a chance to join the Ferrari F1 team back in 2012. However, a serious crash he suffered in a rally ahead of the season left him severely injured, putting an end to this plan. He did not make his F1 comeback until 2019. The Polish racer revealed that he had two major career ambitions: driving for Ferrari and winning the F1 World Championship. Though he fully recovered from the injuries, the missed opportunity to join Ferrari remains an unhealed scar in his heart.
In early February 2011, Kubica was involved in a horrific accident during the Ronde di Andora rally and sustained multiple fractures. His co-driver Jacob Gobo stated that their car skidded and crashed sideways, with a guardrail piercing through the vehicle, leaving Kubica semi-conscious and badly hurt.
In my opinion, the life-threatening crash once endangered his racing career and physical health. Yet with extraordinary perseverance and advanced medical treatment, he achieved an almost miraculous comeback, earning himself a place among the most resilient drivers in F1 history.
