[Saba Sports News] Ferrari unveiled its new sports car Luce globally in Rome, Italy on May 26. Positioned as a four-door all-electric hypercar, it was designed by the team led by former Apple chief design officer Jonathan Ive. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, star drivers of the Ferrari Formula 1 team, got behind the wheel to experience the brand’s first all-electric hypercar.
The two displayed distinctly different driving styles during the test drive. A clip showing Leclerc reacting with repeated exclamations while riding as Hamilton’s passenger soon went viral on social media. In the onboard footage, Leclerc was startled by Hamilton’s aggressive cornering and asked him to slow down several times, while Hamilton responded with laughter. Both drivers noted that although the Luce lacks the iconic sound of a traditional V12 engine, it delivers sharp steering feedback and excellent cornering stability.
As Ferrari’s first fully electric sports car, the Luce is equipped with a 122kWh battery pack and a four-motor setup, generating a combined output of over 1,050 horsepower. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds, with a WLTP range of around 530 kilometres. The model is priced at approximately 650,000 US dollars. Its interior blends minimalist technology with mechanical aesthetics, featuring physical buttons and analogue dials. The car key comes with a colour E-Ink screen, and the elaborate light sequence upon start-up creates a strong ceremonial feel.
In my opinion, the Luce is a pioneering model boasting cutting-edge technology and bold design. It may not be what every fan envisions as a “true Ferrari”, yet it represents what the brand has to become in the electric era. Its ultimate success will hinge on sales performance over the next three years.
