[Saba Sports News] FIFA has announced brand-new pre-match opening rituals will be introduced for the 2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Unlike the previous arrangement where only starting eleven players gathered at the centre circle for national anthems, every squad member – starters and substitutes alike – will line up there to listen to their national anthems.
In its official statement, FIFA explained the revamped format is intended to strengthen the bond between players and supporters and elevate the tournament’s ceremonial atmosphere. Key highlights of the updated pre-match protocol are as follows: a novel 360° all-around ceremonial layout enabling spectators across all stadium stands to enjoy an immersive viewing experience; optimised placement of national flag banners and in-stadium installations to deliver exclusive views for every seating section; the full playing squad consisting of starters and substitutes assembling side-by-side at the centre circle for the anthem to create iconic World Cup snapshots; newly added visual features including player entry archways and flag-carrying rituals, plus bespoke pre-game performances at selected fixtures to ramp up matchday vibes. FIFA confirmed the entire ceremony is built around competing teams and fans, with soundtracks picked from the tournament’s official music album.
In my view, having all players and match officials stand face to face at the centre circle during national anthems produces heartfelt, unifying and memorable scenes filled with national pride, precious moments shared collectively by competing sides and every supporter in attendance.
