[Saba Sports News] Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on local time Tuesday that schools across Mexico City will be closed on June 12, when the national team plays the World Cup opening match, to ease traffic congestion. Mexico co-hosts this World Cup alongside the United States and Canada. The host side will take on South Africa at the Azteca Stadium in the capital on Friday, which serves as the tournament’s opening fixture. At a press conference, Sheinbaum issued an order requiring federal employees in the city to work from home on match day, and confirmed the suspension of classes for students of all ages. According to slides presented at the briefing, the measure is intended to “improve mobility, road safety and accessibility for residents and visitors of Mexico City during the opening of the 2026 FIFA World Cup”.
